Veneer questions

Most asked questions

What are porcelain veneers?

Veneers are thin, tooth-shaped shells bonded to the front of your teeth to change their color, shape, size or spacing. Dr. Payziyev designs them to look like your own teeth, only better.

How much do veneers cost in New York City?

Cost depends on how many teeth, the material and the case. We give you a written fee at your consultation, and we offer payment plans.

How long do veneers last?

Porcelain veneers commonly last 10 to 20 years with good care, and sometimes longer. Night guards and regular checkups help them last.

Do veneers hurt?

The procedure is done with numbing, so you should feel pressure, not pain. Your comfort comes first, and we pause whenever you ask. Mild sensitivity for a few days is normal.

Do veneers damage your teeth?

Traditional veneers need a thin layer of enamel removed, so they are a long-term commitment. In selected cases a minimal-prep approach is possible. We explain which fits you before anything is done.

Are veneers permanent?

They are long lasting, not forever. Expect to replace them eventually, usually after many years.

What is the difference between porcelain and composite veneers?

Porcelain is made in a lab, resists stains and looks very natural. Composite is built directly on the tooth, costs less and can be repaired, but it stains and wears sooner.

What is the difference between veneers and crowns?

A veneer covers the front of a tooth. A crown covers the whole tooth and is used when the tooth is weak, cracked or heavily filled.

Do veneers look fake?

Done well, no. We match shade, shape and translucency to your face and your other teeth.

How many veneers do I need for a full smile?

Usually 6 to 10 on the top, sometimes more. Your smile design shows you the exact number.

Am I a candidate for veneers?

Most adults with healthy gums and enough enamel are. A short consultation and exam is the only way to know.

How many visits do veneers take?

Veneers usually take 2 to 3 visits after your consultation: one to plan and prepare, and one or two to place the final veneers. Temporaries protect your teeth in between.

How do I care for veneers?

Brush twice a day, floss daily, see us for cleanings and wear a night guard if you grind.

Does insurance cover veneers?

We are out of network with insurance, and veneers done for appearance are usually not covered anyway. We offer payment plans, and we can provide the paperwork you need to submit to your plan. We cannot promise reimbursement.

Can I see what my veneers will look like first?

Yes. You can preview your new smile before we start, so you see the shape and shade and can tell us what you would change.

What if a veneer chips or breaks?

Call the office. A chipped veneer can often be repaired or replaced. See our emergency page for what to do until you are seen.

Can veneers be removed?

Not in the way you remove a retainer. Because some enamel is reshaped, you should plan to keep veneers or have them replaced over time.

Can I eat normally with veneers?

Yes. Avoid biting ice, pens or hard candy, and do not open packages with your teeth.

Veneers or Invisalign?

Veneers fix the look of teeth. Invisalign moves them. If your teeth are crowded or shifted, aligning first can mean fewer or thinner veneers. We often combine the two.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of veneers?

Advantages: a natural look, stain resistance and a big change with little downtime. Disadvantages: they usually cannot be undone, they cost more than bonding and they can chip under heavy force.

More questions

How much do veneers cost per tooth on the Upper East Side?

Fees are per tooth and vary by case. Book a consultation and you leave with an exact number, not a range.

Are veneers worth it?

For chipped, stained, gapped or uneven teeth that whitening or bonding cannot fix, many patients say yes. We will tell you honestly if another option suits you better.

Is the veneer procedure painful?

No. We numb the area first. Most patients tell us it was easier than they expected.

Veneers or whitening: which should I choose?

Whitening changes color only. Veneers change color, shape and alignment. Many patients whiten first, then match veneers to that shade.

Veneers or bonding: which is better?

Bonding is faster and cheaper for small fixes. Veneers last longer and look more polished for larger changes.

Can veneers fix crooked teeth?

Mild crookedness, yes. Larger problems are better solved with Invisalign first, which protects more of your natural tooth.

Can veneers close gaps between teeth?

Yes. Closing gaps is one of the most common reasons patients choose veneers.

Can veneers fix chipped, worn or short teeth?

Yes. Veneers rebuild shape and length and protect worn edges.

Can veneers fix stained teeth that will not whiten?

Yes. Porcelain does not take on stain, so it is a good answer for tetracycline or other deep staining.

Can I get veneers on just my front teeth?

Yes. Many patients do 4 to 10 upper teeth. We plan the number around your smile, not a package.

Can I get veneers on my bottom teeth only?

Yes, if that is where the concern is. We check your bite first.

How long does the veneer process take from start to finish?

Veneers take 2 to 3 visits over a few weeks. If Invisalign comes first, add the time for your aligners.

Do I wear temporary veneers?

Yes, in most cases. They protect your teeth and let you preview the look while the final set is made.

Is there downtime after veneers?

No. You can go back to work the same day. Avoid very hard or sticky food for the first day or two.

Can veneers stain?

Porcelain resists stain far better than natural teeth. The edges where veneer meets tooth can still collect plaque, so brushing and cleanings matter.

Can I whiten veneers?

No. Porcelain does not change shade. Whiten your natural teeth before choosing the veneer color.

Do veneers fall off?

Rarely. If one loosens or pops off, keep it safe and call us right away.

Can I get veneers if I grind my teeth?

Often yes, with a custom night guard to protect them. We evaluate your bite first.

Can I get veneers if I have gum disease or cavities?

Those need to be treated first so the veneers have a healthy base.

Can I get veneers if I have crowns or fillings?

Yes. We can match veneers to existing work or replace it as part of the plan.

Is there an age limit for veneers?

Veneers are for adults whose teeth and jaws have finished growing.

Can I pick the shade of my veneers?

Yes. You choose from natural to bright with our guidance.

Do veneers cause bad breath or gum problems?

Not when well made and cared for. Poorly fitting ones can, which is why precision matters.

Do you offer financing or payment plans for veneers?

Yes, we offer payment plans. Ask at your consultation.

What should I look for in a veneer dentist?

Before and after photos of real cases, a smile design before treatment, a conservative approach and a lab you can trust. You can see our cases on our smile gallery.

Who is the best veneer dentist on the Upper East Side?

We will let our patient reviews and gallery speak for us. Dr. Payziyev limits his work to the cases he does well, and you can book a consultation to meet him.

Do you offer veneer consultations in Manhattan?

Yes, at 842 Park Avenue on the Upper East Side. Book online or call 212-570-6060.

Who is not a good candidate for veneers?

People with active gum disease or decay, very little enamel, or heavy untreated grinding. We treat those problems first, or suggest a better option.

Will I need gum contouring with veneers?

Only if your gum line is uneven or you want to show less gum. We tell you at your design visit.

What habits should I avoid with veneers?

Biting nails, chewing ice or pens, and using your teeth as tools. Smoking can discolor the edges.

Why do veneers get replaced?

Most often because of chipping, wear at the edges or gum changes over many years, not because the porcelain fails suddenly.

What should I ask my dentist before getting veneers?

Ask to see real before and after cases, how many teeth are planned, whether you can preview the result, and what the full fee covers. We are glad to go through all of it.
